When you get an invitation to visit a British Legend such as Royal Enfield you jump at it and that is exactly what Phixer did whilst on a trip to India.
On a previous trip to Delhi Phixer met up with a Royal Enfield bikers club called the Mavericks where he enjoyed a ride out on the treacherous roads, the details are covered in Issue 5 “A Passage to India”
Second time around he ended up in Chennai and sought out the Enfield factory and was privileged to the full tour. Royal Enfield were just unveiling their new engine andit was an opportune time to visit. The factory was quite amazing, it was like walking back in time to a 1950’s factory with bikes being assembled by hand and the skill of hand pin striping is still very much alive.
This factory churned out 85 bikes a day and by 8 O’clock at night they were all sold. We got to see the difference between the production bikes for India and the production bikes for the European market…not a lot actually just some slightly higher quality components here and there.
All said and done it was a fantastic experience and how those guys work in the heat and humidity is incredible…keep an eye out for an update in the magazine
